Coffee May Reduce Risk of Gout in Men

Hyon Choi, MD, of Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH) and the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, CAN, and colleagues found that men who drank four or more cups of coffee a day reduced their risk of gout, a painful joint disorder caused by a buildup of uric acid in the blood. These findings appear in the June issue of Arthritis &Rheumatism.

In their prospective study evaluating the lifestyles of over 45,000 men, Choi and colleagues found that the risk of developing gout was 40 percent lower for men who drank four to five cups a day and approximately 60 percent lower for men who drank six or more cups a day compared to men who never drank coffee. Furthermore, parallel findings between these beverages and serum uric acid levels existed according to Choi and colleagues’ companion study published in the June issue of Arthritis Care & Research.

Tea had no measurable effect, the researchers explained, but decaffeinated coffee did, suggesting that perhaps a strong antioxidant and not caffeine is the beneficial ingredient. Choi cautions that people should not drink coffee to treat their gout, but for those at risk for or battling gout, “there is no need to avoid coffee consumption as some guidelines have suggested.”

The National Institutes of Health and TAP Pharmaceuticals funded research and found that caffeine is addictive but good for you. There are several proven health benefits and it causes no diseases. Habitual coffee drinking may lower blood pressure, not raise it as often previously believed. A 2005 study of 155,594 American Women (the ongoing Nurses health Study, as published in the Journal of American Medical Ass. vol. 294, Nov 9, ’05) shows the percentage change in relative risk of hypertension when the daily coffee intake was:

less than 1 cup: 0%

1 cup: plus 6%

2 to 3 cups: 0%

4 to 5 cups: minus 8%

6 and more cups: minus10%

The Associated Press reports that researchers from the University of Scranton in Pennsylvania have determined that coffee provides more healthful antioxidants–substances that are thought to fight cancer and heart disease–than any other food or beverage found in the typical American diet. Led by chemistry professor Joe A. Vinson, the team analyzed the antioxidant content of 100 popular foods and beverages,including vegetables, fruits, nuts, spices and oils. Using data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture they then figured out how much of each food is typically consumed.

An average adult consumes this many antioxidants daily from: Coffee (1.6 cups): 1,299 milligrams / Tea: 294 milligrams / Bananas: 76 milligrams / Dry beans: 72 milligrams / Corn: 48 milligrams. This isn’t the first study to praise the health benefits of coffee. Earlier, Japanese researchers reported that people who drink coffee every day or almost every day have half the risk of developing liver cancer, compared with people who never drink it. The protective effect occurred with just one to two cups daily and increased with three to four cups. In addition, Harvard University researchers determined that coffee consumption can decrease by as much as 50% in men and 30% in women the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Downing diet soda tied to risk of premature birth

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) – New research suggests that drinking lots of artificially sweetened beverages may be linked with an increased risk of premature births.

“It may be non-optional for pregnant women to have high consumption of these types of products,” Dr. Thorhallur I. Halldorsson of the Statens Serum Institut in Copenhagen, one of the researchers on the study, told Reuters Health.

“Diet” drinks are widely promoted as a healthy alternative to sugary sodas and juices, but Halldorsson and his colleagues note that there’s been little research on the safety of regular consumption of artificial sweeteners in humans.

Soft drinks — both artificially sweetened and sugar sweetened — were recently linked to high blood pressure, the researchers add, which increases the risk of premature delivery. To investigate whether there might be a direct link, the researchers looked at nearly 60,000 Danish women who reported on their diet, including how many soft drinks they had each day, at around 25 weeks of pregnancy.

Around 5 percent of women delivered their babies before 37 weeks.

Women who had at least one serving of artificially sweetened soda a day while they were pregnant were 38 percent more likely to deliver preterm than women who drank no diet soda at all, the researchers report in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

Women who had at least four diet sodas a day were nearly 80 percent more likely to deliver preterm. The association was the same for normal-weight and overweight women.

The researchers did not report the actual risk of premature babies in each group. However, according to the March of Dimes, one in eight babies — or around 13 percent — is born too soon. This means that if drinking diet soda does indeed increase risk – which must first be confirmed by other research teams — a woman who drank at least one diet soda daily would have a 17 percent risk, while her risk would be around 22 percent if she drank four or more diet sodas.

In a statement, the Calorie Control Council, a lobbying group for companies that make and distribute low-calorie foods, called the study “misleading.”

“This study may unduly alarm pregnant women. While this study is counter to the weight of the scientific evidence demonstrating that low-calorie sweeteners are safe for use in pregnancy, research has shown that overweight and obesity can negatively affect pregnancy outcomes,” Beth Hubrich, a dietitian with the council, said in the statement. “Further, low-calorie sweeteners can help pregnant women enjoy the taste of sweets without excess calories, leaving room for nutritious foods and beverages without excess weight gain – something that has been shown to be harmful to both the mother and developing baby.”

Because only diet soda was linked to preterm delivery, not sugar-sweetened soda, the findings suggest that the artificial sweetener itself, not soda drinking, could account for the relationship, the researchers say. However, they add, other possible causes for the link can’t be ruled out.

The researchers didn’t look at specific artificial sweeteners, and Halldorsson noted that many beverages contain more than one of these chemicals. However, he and his colleagues say, there is indirect evidence linking the sweetener aspartame to preterm delivery in animals.

Aspartame breaks down into methanol and other substances in the body, which can in turn be converted to toxic substances such as formaldehyde and formic acid, the researchers explain. And studies in non-human primates have linked even very low exposure to methanol to shortened pregnancy and labor complications.

While pregnant women who consume soft drinks shouldn’t be alarmed by the findings, Halldorsson said, “what we are seeing warrants further attention.”

According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, women who normally use the artificial sweeteners saccharin (Sweet n’ Low), aspartame (NutraSweet), sucralose (Splenda) or acesulfame K (Sunett, Sweet One) can safely continue to do so “in moderation” during pregnancy.

Had My First Cup of BSkinny Coffee Tonight

I need to start this post by saying that I have NEVER liked coffee. I love the aroma but hate the taste. So, the idea of me buying a coffee maker and actually making coffee to drink -- is a little unreal. But, I've been looking forward to the release of the BSkinny Coffee. I really believe that I messed up my metabolism years ago by skipping 1 or 2 meals a day for a long time. That was a temporary way to trim down - but it does not help the body in the long run. So, I eat or don't eat and stay the same size-- so I am very excited about a product that could help me deal with the things I did years ago to mess up how my body processes food.

So, three boxes of BSkinny Coffee and BSweet Sweetener arrived at my house this evening. I licked my finger and dipped it into the sweetener to try to small bit and its sweet - that was a good sign. I think it has a slight fruity taste which is fine with me. The ingredients say that it has kiwi flavor and other fruits. Makes sense because it is made from fruit extracts. I've heard it is 5 times as sweet as sugar and that seems very possible.

Back to the coffee - 1 - 1 oz package makes 2 - 12 oz cups. Would you believe that the only cup I have is 12 oz :) So I made one cup - the recommendation is 1-3 cups per day and since its evening - 1 seemed like plenty for now. Keep in mind that I've only made 4 cups of coffee in my life - so I'm still playing with the measurements but it was pretty good. I added a very small bit of BSweet Sweetener and a little bit of the french vanilla creamer I bought last week and its not bad at all. I'm still looking for the chocolate raspberry creamer that was discussed in a training call a couple of weeks ago but this works for now :)
